History of Hitachi Construction Machinery

Hitachi named Tilburg-based Hovers Constructie NV as the exclusive importer of Hitachi's construction equipment in the Benelux in 1968. In the 1970s, the company introduced a series of locally built crawler cranes that were well-received around the world. Hovers Constructie NV ceased operations in 1972. On April 1, 1972, HCME was formed as the first international branch of HCM in order to continue supporting existing customers. In 1981, the company opened a parts distribution centre, which was responsible for both the manufacture of locally designed products as well as the distribution of all HCM products throughout Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Fiat and Hitachi started a plant machinery manufacturing, distribution, and marketing collaboration in 1986, with the initial intention to develop a small range of Hitachi crawler excavators in Fiat's factory in San Mauro, Turin, Italy. In the 1990s, HCME expanded production at Oosterhout by starting to manufacture mini excavators, which led to a trebling of production volumes due to an expansion of coverage into Russia. Euclid and Hitachi formed a distribution relationship in October 1998. As a result, in April 2000, a new component distribution centre was opened in Oosterhout, allowing HMCE to take over the exclusive distribution of Euclid dump truck parts. Hitachi and Fiat ended their joint venture partnership in March 2001.
